Drug Take Back Program

The stories are lining up for expired drug pick-ups.

CAPA’s own Nathan Pope, at Live Oak Pharmacy were able to start a program to collect expired and unwanted prescription medication. You can see other pharmacies are following suit. Look at this report from California:

Start spreading the word, disposing of expired and unused medications improves safety of the environment and us as consumers of drinking water.

Technician Credentials

Hi CAPA members and visitors!

I’ve seen some interesting technician credentials (RCPhT) show up on business cards recently. I checked into this with our good friends at TSBP. The only recognized credentials for technicians is PhTR for Pharmacy Technician Registered, and CPhT for Certified Pharmacy Technician. If you see RCPhT being used or other variation, please kindly let that tech know they should make a correction before they print more business cards or send out their next email.

Early registration discount for TPA 2010

Remember that people wanting to be attendees at the 2010 TPA Rxperts Conference and Expo need to register soon if they want to receive an early registration discount.

If you visit the TPA website for more information you will see that the deadline is April 14th, 2010.

The conference is occurring in July from the 15th to the 18th in Austin, Texas at the Hilton Hotel Downtown. The hotel and the conference are being held in the same location.

March 4th Meeting Minutes

The officers of CAPA have decided to publish our meeting minutes so that all CAPA members can view what it is we discuss. It is also a good opportunity for any members to ask questions via the blog. You can always respond using the comment tool below. Once it is posted we will ensure a response int eh comments ourselves or bring it up at the next meeting.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the next CAPA meeting this Thursday at Cannoli Joe’s in South Austin. We will be listening to an update to Texas Law from our very own CAPA member Gay Dodson, the Executive Director of the Texas State Board of Pharmacy.

This educational session will have CE available and keep in mind that the session will be recorded for future use as a webinar CE.

This is our joint meeting with AASHP, so please welcome all the new faces, and some regular ones, when you see them in the meeting room.

As a reminder, e-mails and letters have been mailed out to renew your TPA memberships. There have been some changes to the renewal process including how you make a contribution to the local association. Please remember to add $30.00 in the appropriate section of the renewal, online or in print, in order for your local CAPA association to receive the dues to keep having these functions. More importantly the money is also used to provide scholarships to the University of Texas College of Pharmacy and for active CAPA members interested in promoting pharmacy advocacy.

One of the added benefits to joining TPA this year will be a subscription to the Pharmacist Letter, which many pharmacist consider the best 20 minute read in order to keep up to date in our practice. This is a nice value for the renewal or beginning to your TPA membership.

Also, use this opportunity to recruit other pharmacy personnel to the organization and to CAPA. The more members we have the more opportunities we can create for meetings like this one and for other great events in the future. Technicians, Students, Pharmacists and anyone else is welcome to join the association, just send them over to the TPA website for more information.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone this week. And for those of you unable to make the event, have a healthy and happy holiday.

Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery

Provides comprehensive immunization education
Provides pharmacists with the skills, resources, and materials necessary to establish and promote a successful immunization service
Trains pharmacists to identify at-risk patient populations needing immunizations and to maintain necessary immunization records
Reviews basic immunology

Program Components:

12 hour (1.2 CEU) self-study modules with case studies and assessment exam
8.0 hour (0.80 CEU) live seminar with final exam
Hands-on assessment of intramuscular and subcutaneous injection technique

We have our next meeting place and time set and the eVite should be coming out soon.

CAPA is proud to announce Continuing Education (CE) to finish out 2009! And an opportunity to welcome AASHP members as we enjoy the evening together. We hope to see you there! We’ll be meeting at Cannoli Joe’s in South Austin. The address shows East 290 but for those of you Austinites, it is known as “west 290″ located between MoPac and S. Lamar on 290/71 south of downtown.

1st Annual TPA Leadership Forum

On August 28 & 29 of 2009, TPA invited some of their active leaders within the organization in order to talk about where the organization is heading. We spoke of our mission and strategic plan for the next three years. TPA staff along with many of the board of directors listened to various TPA members throughout the 2-day event. Each of the participants had something to contribute, but most of us left with optimism for the future of the association.

Each participant set a goal for the coming year that was attainable. They conveyed their particular goal to the president of TPA, Gene Adams, in an open forum.

CAPA had representation from Nathan Pope, Alexis Balko, Joe Jospeh, Jason Sparks, and Marcus Stavchansky. Many of the other large locals, and small, were also represented. Take a look at some of the photos from the event:

Hello all,

Marcus here. I am going to be the managing editor and main contributor to our new CAPA Austin Blog beginning September 1st, 2009.

Many of our board members will also be making posts to talk about CAPA meeting information, current events, news updates, and anything pharmacy and CAPA related they would like to talk about. I would highly suggest you follow us in a news reader such as Google reader to keep up to date with all of our latest posts. Google will walk you through the entire process for using their news reader. If you do not know what a new reader is, now is the time to learn, in what takes you hours to get information on the internet can be reduced to minutes with the use of a ‘.rss’ reader.

I am looking forward to our future meetings at CAPA and to our TPA conference in 2010 which will be held in our own town, Austin, TX.
